The 1183 learners of Ebenezer Majombozi High School in the Gompo location now have access to a brand new, stocked library on the school grounds. The new library, which was sponsored by Hemingways Casino, was officially opened on the 1st of November 2011.
“The opening of the new library was an auspicious occasion for the school and its learners, who up to now have not had easy access to books and reading resources on the school property. Not only is the library an essential resource to learners but to the school’s teachers as well.
“The relevance and importance of reading and research resources in education cannot be underestimated. Of course, due to home circumstance some learners from the school do not have an appropriate place to read, do their homework or study at home. The library, in addition to giving them access to reading materials, also provides a quiet space in which to do their work.
“We are thrilled and proud to have been part of bringing the library to fruition,” says Xoliswa Magengelele, Human Resources Manager at Hemingways Casino.
According to Magengelele, the casino donated R30 000 towards the library as part of its ongoing commitment to its Touching Lives Programme with Ebenezer Majombozi High School. Through this programme, Hemingways Casino has helped sponsor the education costs of a few underprivileged learners at the school. This includes tuition fees, uniforms, stationary, text books and extra mural activities.
“It was natural for us to contribute to establishing the much-needed library on the premises to support the learners in their studies,” says Magengelele.
Itec was responsible for sourcing the close to 5 000 books housed in the library. Learners, teacher and parents were given training on using the library system.
