On Friday 20 August, Hemingways Casino handed over a trolley-load of pet food to the East London SPCA. Once again, Hemingways made it possible for eagre movie-goers to donate pet food to the SPCA in exchange for tickets to the free screening of CATS AND DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE .
The East London SPCA is a non profit, non government funded animal welfare organisation, which accepts any stray or unwanted animals. Running costs are between R250 000 and R260 000 each month and include veterinary costs, feeding of animals and staff salaries. All funding is received through donations, which makes events such as this so welcome.
The free screening at Hemingways Casino served to both raise awareness of the plight of the East London SPCA and bring in much needed food and funds. “We believe it is very important to support the SPCA as they provide such a vital service to the community, from caring for stray dogs and cats to collecting and caring for stray livestock which may wander onto our roads and cause accidents,” says Mike Page, GM of Hemingways Casino.
Long-time supporters of the SPCA, this is the second free-screening hosted by Hemingways Casino. Last year in November, the movie OLD DOGS drew about 130 animal lovers. This month’s movie, CATS AND DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE is a thrilling comedy about how the age-old battle between felines and canines must be put aside as they join forces for the first time in history to save themselves and their humans. Kids of all ages enjoyed the free screening. The movie is still showing at Hemingways Movies, for those who missed out.
Cedrick Lottering, Official Fundraiser/PRO expressed his grateful thanks to Hemingways for their active support. “It’s people like these who stand firm and help prevent cruelty to animals. Many sick, injured and abused animals enter our sanctuary each day, through no fault of their own.
Our objectives are to prevent all acts of cruelty, neglect and/or improper treatment of animals; to shelter and care for all sick, injured and/or abandoned animals, and to influence and encourage a humane attitude towards all animals.
People who are unable to afford veterinary services are able to make use of the SPCA veterinary services. Services are charged according to what people can afford to pay. NO sick or injured animal is turned away because their owner cannot afford veterinary care,” says Lottering.
“The SPCA is one of our charities of choice. It is so wonderful to see people support such a good cause,” says Mpho Mokoa of the Hemingways marketing team.
Members of the public are invited enter the fun, annual Hemingways Nite Race on 24 September, which is another Hemingways fundraiser for the SPCA. With your support, the SPCA will be able to turn the items on their wish list into reality, and improve the lives of animals in East London.

- Kennel Sponsorship R500 Per annum (for maintenance)
- Donations towards the Clinic as it runs at a cost of ±R40000 a month
